Plot / Storyline:
In the Chatham Islands, 1849, American lawyer Adam Ewing watches Autua, a Moriori slave, be whipped. Autua boards Ewing’s ship and persuades him to plead Autua to join the crew as a free man. Autua saves Ewing’s life before his doctor, Henry Goose, can poison him and steal his gold under the guise of a cure for a parasitic worm. In San Francisco, Ewing and his wife condemned their father’s complicity in slavery and left to join the abolition movement.
In 1936, English composer Robert Frobisher found work as an amanuensis for aging composer Wynn Ayers, allowing Frobisher to compose his masterpiece, “The Cloud Atlas Sextet”; Frobisher reads Ewing’s magazine among the books in Ayers’ mansion. Ayers demanded credit for the sextet and threatened to expose Frobisher’s bisexuality if she refused. Frobisher shoots Ayers and goes into hiding using the name Ewing. He ends the sextet and shoots himself before his boyfriend, Rufus Sixsmith, arrives.
