Storyline:

In 2005, the only thing that hurt Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez more than his face from a recent bicycle accident was his desperate need for story ideas. That’s when he discovers Nathaniel Ayers, a mentally disturbed, homeless street musician who possesses extraordinary talent, even through his half-broken instruments. Inspired by his story, Lopez writes an award-winning series of articles about Ayers and seeks to do more to help both him and the rest of LA’s underclass have a better life. However, Lopez’s good intentions run headlong into the harsh realities of the power of Ayers’ personal demons and the larger social injustices facing the homeless. Regardless, Lopez and Ayers must find a way to overcome their deepest fears and frustrations in order to hope for a better future for both of them.
